With oils on rice paper and cartridge, artist Laura David Foster has used a process-oriented approach influenced by abstract expressionism for the series of monoprints in this exhibition. Leaning into her lived experience and her studies in psychology and spirituality, the artist created a series of prints which express cathartic release and externalization of emotions. She has introduced a figure to portray the soul, inner critic, and inner child. Although it’s of her own journey, she hopes the viewer will find pieces of it that resonate. There are two prints titled ‘Resilience’ and ‘Centering’ selected from her studies at St. Stephen’s College where the print-making approach called ‘touch drawing’ was introduced to her. She chose to continue in this direction for her final project in the visual art certificate program in the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Laura finds it meaningful that ‘psyche’ is the Greek word for both soul and butterfly and that the metamorphosis of the butterfly is an ancient symbol for spirituality.
